7-Keto DHEA is a metabolite of the adrenal steroid dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). It is almost identical in chemical structure to DHEA and is converted to its form from DHEA in a two stage process. Scientific research has indicated its immune system boosting and memory enhancing effects. Some cells of the immune system use chemical messages in the form of cytokines which signal the whole immune system to go into “battle mode”. 7-Keto DHEA has been shown to increase the production of the cytokine IL-2 which regulates the T-Helper cells. Studies on mice have shown that when this chemical was administered along with a memory abolishing chemical like the scopolamine, the mice were able to resist memory loss.
Bromelain - There are numerous health benefits of bromelain. Studies have shown that bromelain helps improve both the health and quality of life in a variety of ways. It is an enzyme that breaks down proteins in the body and helps ease and prevent a number of diseases due to its valuable medicinal properties. It is beneficial for arthritis patients since it helps decrease swelling and inflammation which can be caused by this disorder. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, bromelain can also aid in treatment of rheumatism. It also has blood thinning properties, and thus it can be efficacious in preventing and treating clots in blood and plaques in arteries that in turn helps prevent cardiovascular problems. It helps alleviate aches and pain.
Gelatin is a solid substance that comes from the collagen found inside the skin and bones of some animals, mostly from pigs, cattles and other domesticated animals. The collagen becomes gelatin after undergoing the process of partial hydrolysis. Gelatin is a protein that is translucent, colorless, odor-free, breakable and almost without taste. One property of gelatin is its ability to melt easily when heated and in the same way, solidify when cooled. Commonly, it is being utilized as a gelling agent in many industries like food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. It's also known by its E number which is E441.
Grapefruit Extract, also known as citrus seed extract is a liquid that is derived from the seeds, pulp as well as the white membranes of grapefruit. Some scientists claim that grapefruit extract possesses antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties while others recommend it for the treatment of earache, throat infections etc. There are two ways in which grapefruit extract is prepared. One is the natural, self-made grapefruit extract which is made by grinding the seed and pulp and then mixing them with glycerine. The second method is the commercial way in which the seed, pulp, glycerine and synthetic preservatives are all blended together. Grapefruit extract is believed to have a lot of scope in the health food industry. However one has to be careful as grapefruit can have several interactions with certain drugs like warfarin.
Green Tea Extract- Camellia sinensis, or more commonly the tea plant is a genus of flowering plants which is generally being used to produce tea, including green tea, oolong, black tea, white tea and pu-erh tea, also called Bolay tea. The different oxidation process makes the final difference. Tea plants can grow out into a tree, but are generally pruned to allow for easy hand picking. While camellia sinensis is being cultivated all around the globe in tropical and subtropical regions, this South and Southeast Asian native is most popular when imported from India and China. Medical uses of tea stem from the traditional Chinese medicine, where it was used as a bronchodilator and to treat angina pectoris, coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular diseases. Green tea extract is used as appetite suppressant and thermogenesis increasing agent.
Guarana contains a significant amount of guaranine, a substance that is similar to caffeine found in coffee beans. It helps stimulate the adrenal glands and increase the production and release of hormones such as epinephrine, norepinephrine (adrenaline), and dopamine. This helps the metabolism of the body that enhances fat loss, and increases energy and endurance. It helps the body burn the fats to be used for energy. It aids in fighting stress, weakness and fatigue. As a stimulant, it also improves mental alertness, clarity, focus, concentration, and memory retention. Guarana also also improves the libido or sex drive in both men and women. Guarana also contains tannins that help prevent diarrhea and soothes the digestive system.
Hoodia Gordonii, which although popular, has no published randomized controlled trials in humans to show hoodia is safe or effective in pill form. One study published in the September 2004 issue of Brain Research found that injections of p57 (The Active ingredient in Raw, Fresh Cut Hoodia, not dried) into the appetite center of rat brains resulted in altered levels of ATP, an energy molecule that may affect hunger. The animals receiving the P57 injections also ate less than rats that received placebo injections. However, this was an animal study and INJECTIONS IN THE BRAIN are very different from oral consumption, so it cannot be used to show that oral hoodia can suppress appetite in humans. Hoodia Gordonii is a succulent (a cactus of the aloe family) found in the Kalahari desert of South Africa. Most Hoodia Gordonii products contain very little, if any of the active ingredient needed to suppress hunger. Real Hoodia is very rare and is even an endangered plant. Most importantly, Hoodia has only demonstrated any effect in fresh, raw pieces of the plant. The effectiveness of powdered Hoodia has yet to be shown and may actually increase hunger. It's main use is as a cheap alternative to the more expensive weight loss herbs, which are the only alternative left after the banning of ephedra. Most supplement manufacturers can not use the more expensive weight loss herbs because it will result in a product that would be too expensive to compete with other more popular inexpensive diet supplements.
Magnesium Stearate is coommonly used as a filling agent in the manufacture of capsules and tablets, such as vitamins, the source of this ingredient is typically bovine. However, there is an increasing number of vegetarian options in which the product specifically indicates it contains magnesium stearate from vegetable sources.
Niacin is a vitamin that wards against pellagra, a disease characterized by a vitamin B3 deficiency. Niacin is made from pyridine and is often called vitamin B3 or nicotinamide, because they all three have similar formulas. Niacin and nicotinamide are comparable in make up, but only niacin works to lower cholesterol levels. The restoration of DNA is also known to be a positive side effect of taking niacin. A fairly large number of individuals, particularly those in third world countries or those suffering from alcoholism, have been shown to be lacking in niacin. Niacin is often taken as a supplement by those with high cholesterol levels, as it has been proven to lower “bad” cholesterol and raise “good” cholesterol.
Silica is silicon dioxide, a trace mineral found in bones, teeth, skin, eyes, glands and organs. It also helps keep skin elastic. Silica works with calcium to maintain bone strength.
Vegetable Cellulose is a commercial product designed to act as filler or a disintegrant and consequently finds use in making capsule sheaths. It is made by chemically modifying cellulose which is the durable material that makes plant cell walls. Biochemically cellulose is a long chain carbohydrate composed of bonded monosaccharide units. Vegetable cellulose is manufactured by introducing certain chemical groups in the otherwise simple chemical structure of cellulose. The most common raw material used to produce vegetable cellulose is wood pulp from soft wood trees, such as gymnosperms. Its most important benefit is in the pharmaceutical industry where it is used to make capsules. The capsule itself tastes neutral but masks the taste of a very unpleasant tasting powdered drug placed inside it and to add to this, the human body cannot process cellulose so it does not undergoes any sort of metabolism in out body and passes out with your faeces.
