Cassia Extract, also known as Cinnamomum aromaticum or Cinnamomum cassia, is a species in the Family Lauraceae, a very close relative of Cinnamomum verum, or cinnamon. Just like the more famous true cinnamon, the aromatic bark is being used as a spice. Cassia trees are evergreens and can grow up to fifteen meters tall. Interestingly enough, in the United States and Canada, Cassia is sold as cinnamon, the spice, and the true cinnamon, the C. verum, is largely unknown. It is native to Asia, mainly south of China, India, Vietnam and Bangladesh. Cassia bark is one of the fifty fundamental herbs of the traditional Chinese medicine and recent studies have established that Cassia extract may lower the fasting blood sugar. The caused insulin sensitivity is due to the ingredients polyphenols.
Cissus Quadrangularis is a plant belonging to the grape family Vitaceae. The plants of the family are characterized by the presence of climbing stems and characteristic fruit borne in bunches called grapes. The family has many species of the genus Cissus but Cissus quadrangualris is important in that extensive research has been done on the medicinal properties of its fruit. It is rich in the many biochemicals such as carotenoids, triterpenoids and vitamin C (ascorbic acid). These chemical are anti-oxidants and vitamin C is referred to as the longevity vitamin due to its benefits. It is also believed to have a healing and regenerating effect on tendons, ligaments and muscles as well as promoting weight loss.
Coenzyme Q10- The vitamin-like Coenzyme Q10 or (CoQ10) is a fat soluble substance, found in all human cells. It acts as an antioxidant thus helping the body to get rid of free radicals and facilitating biochemical reactions that produce energy in the body cells. It is found mainly in the mitochondria where the cells make energy. Since mitochondria are found in abundance in the heart and liver cells, these cells naturally contain CoQ10 too. Needless to say, those who suffer from heart disease are the one who have relatively low CoQ10 too, as the heart cannot function to its full capacity if CoQ10 is not adequately present. CoQ10 deficiency may also give rise to periodontal disease though there isn’t enough evidence to prove so. However, it has been found that those suffering from this disease have relatively less CoQ10.
Epimedium, also popularly known as horny goat weed is a genus of herbaceous perennials belonging to the family Berberidaceae. The plant is found to possess aphrodisiac properties. Legend has it that a Chinese goat herder observed and reported increased sexual activity in his heard after it consumed the plant, hence the name. Its active ingredient is icariin. This ingredient has been reported to have a number of effects on the body. It inhibits the degradation of cyclic guanosine mono phosphate cGMP by PDE5 in the blood vessels supplying the corpus cavernosum of the penis. cGMP is the activated form of GMP produced by the release of nitric oxide in the vessels and relaxes the smooth muscle tissue resulting in the improvement in blood flow and erection. It also acts to increase mental faculties.
Ginkgo Biloba is derived from the Ginkgo tree, which has been around from several million years. The Chinese were the first to use it to treat various ailments such as asthma and lung congestion. They also used it to boost sexual energy, promote longevity, and control blood flow. Ginkgo Biloba helps in improving blood circulation in the body that in turn keeps the body fit and promotes general longevity. Due to its positive effects on the circulatory system, Ginkgo also proves beneficial in the treatment of ear and eye disorders. The two groups of active components namely the flavonoids and terpene lactones present in Ginkgo help in controlling allergic inflammation and asthma. Despite its excellent therapeutic properties, use of Ginkgo Biloba supplements may also result in minor side effects like restlessness and headaches or more serious ones such as gastrointestinal discomfort, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea.
Grape seed is the seeds of the ordinary grapes. They are used primarily because they have polyphenols recognized as anti oxidants. Research confirms numerous health benefits of grape seed extracts; they limit lipid oxidation, thus controlling high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Grape seeds contain phenolics, which are useful in treatment of heart disease because they inhibit platelet aggregation and reduce inflammation, however, the results are preliminary and more research is being done to confirm these facts. A polyphenol contained in grape seeds is resveratrol which may inhibit cancer cell growth and proliferation, and it may also be active against HIV by inhibiting expression and replication of the genome of the virus.
Griffonia Seed , also known as L-5-HTP, is produced naturally from the Griffonia simplicifolia trees in West Africa. Africans have been using the extract for centuries for a natural wound healer and cure for kidney infections. L-5 Hydroxytryptophan has traditionally been used for many other treatments as well, including as a combat for stomach problems, to produce a higher libido, and as an internal cleanser. In recent times, L-5 Hydroxytryptophan’s best attribute has been its indication to increase serotonin levels in the brain, which means it works similarly to many antidepressants on the market, but in a natural form. This increase in serotonin provides users with a sense of serenity and calm as it is a natural tranquilizer.
L-Carnitine - Carnitine is an ammonium compound. It is derived from two amino acids, namely lysine and methionine. Carnitine is needed to transport fatty acids, when they are removed from the storage in fat cells and used for additional energy. Carnitine used to be labeled Vitamin Bt, the biologically active form is named L-Carnitine. Food sources of carnitine are found in red meat and dairy products, but also in several nuts, seeds, legumes, cereals, pulses, other vegetables and some fruits like bananas. While the weight loss effectiveness of L-Carnitine is still in research, it is a proven fact that it increases the energy metabolism levels and that in elderly persons L-Carnitine significantly improves the neurotransmitter functions. It also improves the bone structure and has substantial antioxidant action.
Niacin is an essential B vitamin, in cellular energy used for the promotion of healthy cardiovascular function, nervous system function, and immune function. Niacin nutritionally manages cholesterol levels already within the normal range. Also known as vitamin B3, niacin is one of a complex of B vitamins that are essential for good health. Niacin is so-called nicotinic acid, known also as nicotinamide. It helps regulate blood sugar and also works at cellular level protecting the skin and enhances the digestive system. And being an originator of the amino acid tryptophan, it can be made by tryptophan in the body. It’s also a coenzyme playing an important role in body metabolism. Supplements of vitamin B3 are also known to reduce levels of bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol in the blood.
Propionyl-L-Carnitine, also known as Glycine Propionyl-L-CarnitineHCl, L-carnitinePropionyl or sometimes referred to as HCl, Glycine Propionyl-L-Carnitine Hydrochloride is a type of amino acid, or a component of protein, which is naturally extracted from the body. Propionyl-L-Carnitine is commonly used to control or aid poor circulation or intermittent claudication in our body which contributes to frequent leg pains while walking. Propionyl-L-Carnitine is also used as a form of medication for chest pains, heart failure or congestion and other complicated heart diseases. Some studies claims that Propionyl-L-Carnitine are also efficient in treating deficiency of testosterones in males, often referred to as male menopause, and erection problems for male who’s suffering from diabetes.
Quercetin, a bioflavonoid derived mostly from blue-green algae. Quercetin is a strong antioxidant commonly found in onions, wine and tea.
Sodium is the element that has the atomic number 11 in the periodic table and is commonly known as the main component in the table salt, together with chloride. Interestingly enough, it is probably the one dietary component which does require limitation rather than supplementation, since that average daily nutritional requirement is around half a gram per day. This most popular food seasoning, salt, is providing the most common source of sodium and chloride in human diets, but is generally overused and may cause health problems, such as high blood pressure, if consumed overly generously. The suggested dose of table salt, or rather the upper limit portion, would be somewhat less than 6 gram per day, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, referenced by FDA. In the UK this limit is set at four grams per day.
